The picture you see above is of a U.S. Marine in full combat load. The rucksack in the picture is made to survive through combat. Since you're not in the military, you won't need to lug all that gear. However, for your outdoor activities, you would want a Pack that can take on the rough and last through time. It's like the old adage, "You get what you pay for". Buy a cheap Pack, you'll regret it. Buy a premium Pack, treat it right and it will last you almost a lifetime.
The type of Pack you need depends on your outdoor activity. REI has a great article on how to choose the right Pack [Click Here for article]. To summarize that article, always prepare ahead of time and consider the following:
- Pack Capacity. What outdoor activity are you going to be doing (day hike, 3-day hike/camp, camping, trail running, kayaking, etc). SAFETY! Always bring your first aid kit and any other safety items related to your activity. WATER! For any activity, always have room for water.
- Pack Features. What items do you need for your activity? But try to pack light.
- Pack Fit. Try on the pack (weighted) and make sure it feels good
I, personally, am a fan of "5.11 Tactical" products [Click Here for their website]. They manufacture gear, clothing and accessories THAT CAN GO THROUGH the most demanding situations. See my "5.11 Tactical" page for more details.
